We Finally Made It to Hen House Eatery (And Now We're Obsessed)

A Minneapolis Breakfast Spot That's 100% Worth the Hype

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Let's get into Hen House Eatery . Cindy and I have been meaning to check this place out for months, and we finally made it happen. We're definitely kicking ourselves for not going sooner.

Here's the thing about Hen House. This Minneapolis breakfast and brunch spot gets crazy busy on weekends, and for good reason. We tried showing up on a Saturday, saw the line wrapping around the block, and turned right back around. So we switched up our strategy and hit them on a Thursday afternoon around 1 pm, and it was absolutely the right move. No wait. Instant seating.

The Vibe: Old School Diner Meets Modern Breakfast Joint

Walking into Hen House Eatery feels like stepping into a really cool throwback diner, but with way better food than your grandpa's greasy spoon. They've got a full bar right in the middle of the restaurant for a nice retro feel. The ambiance is cozy, nostalgic, and honestly just makes you want to settle in and take your time with breakfast (even though the service is lightning fast, but we'll get to that).

The place has a perfect balance of casual and put together. It's the kind of place where you can come as you are, but the food is delicious enough that it feels like a real treat.

What We Ordered

The Lupita Burrito: A Breakfast Burrito That Means Business

Lupita Burrito with ancho guajillo sauce at Hen House Eatery

I went with the Lupita Burrito with ancho guajillo sauce , and wow, this thing was massive. I'm a pretty solid eater, and I could only finish a little over half before I had to tap out. The rest came home with me, and honestly? I was pumped about it. Which meant I got to enjoy it all over again the next day, so no complaints here.

Here's what made this burrito special. They load it up with shredded carnitas pork that has this almost sweet flavor that pairs perfectly with the ancho guajillo sauce they drizzle over the top. And yes, I said drizzle over the top, because this is a wet burrito. Think enchilada style. You don't see wet breakfast burritos very often in Minneapolis, so this was a really nice twist.

The jalapeños inside added the perfect crunch, and the scrambled eggs were cooked exactly right. Not overdone, not runny, just fluffy and perfect. If you're going to Hen House Eatery and you're hungry (like, actually hungry), get the Lupita. You won't regret it.

Babe's Eggs Benedict: Cajun Hollandaise

Cindy ordered the Babe's Eggs Benedict, and she was raving about it the entire meal. The standout? The jalapeño cheddar cornbread that the eggs sit on. It's a subtle twist, but it takes the dish to another level. The pork was perfectly cooked with zero fatty pieces (you know how some places give you weird, chewy bacon or sausage? Yeah, not here), and the cajun hollandaise sauce added an amazing kick without being too spicy.

She kept saying "this is SO good" between bites, so I'm pretty sure that's a solid endorsement.

The Bloody Mary Situation: Bacon Me Crazy (BMC)

We both got the Bacon Me Crazy bloody mary because, well, the name alone sold us. The highlight was definitely the stuffed jalapeño that came on top, which had a bacon cream cheese filling. That combo with the bloody mary flavor hit just right.

Now, full transparency, the bloody mary itself was pretty good, but it could've had a bit more flavor to really blow us away. Still worth ordering, though, especially if you're a bloody mary fan.

The Desserts We Didn't Plan On (But Couldn't Resist)

Cindy and I almost never get desserts when we go out because we're usually stuffed. But Hen House has a full bakery with pastries and bars that look absolutely incredible, and we caved.

We got the Lemon Raspberry Bar and the Mint Brownie Bar (which was a Valentine's Day special). We almost finished both of them. The flavors were so on point that we couldn't stop picking at them even though we were full. If you have even a tiny bit of room left, check out their bakery selection. Chocolate lovers, fruit lovers, whatever your vibe is, they've got you covered.

Service That'll Blow Your Mind

Okay, this might've been the most impressive part. Once we ordered, our food came out in less than 10 minutes. I'm not exaggerating. We barely had time to sip our bloody marys before our plates arrived. And it's not like the food was thrown together, either. Everything was perfectly plated and tasted amazing. I don't know how they do it, but the kitchen at Hen House Eatery is on it.

The Menu: Something for Everyone

One thing I really appreciated about Hen House is their menu . It's extensive without being overwhelming, and they've got great drink selections to match. Whether you're in the mood for a classic breakfast, something a little more adventurous like a wet burrito, or just want to grab a pastry and coffee, they've got you covered.

They're open weekdays from 7am to 3pm and weekends from 7:30am to 2pm, so there's plenty of time to swing by.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

  • 🚗
Parking: They don't have a designated parking lot, but there's street parking nearby. We actually walked from our apartment.
  • Weekend waits: If you're planning to go on a Saturday or Sunday, expect a wait. It gets packed. Our tip? Hit them up on a weekday if you can. Way less chaotic, and you'll actually get to enjoy the experience without the crowd stress.

The Verdict: 9/10 (And a New Top 3 Spot)

We're giving Hen House Eatery a solid 9 out of 10. The food is excellent, the old school diner ambiance is on point, and the service is ridiculously fast. This place has officially cracked our top 3 list of breakfast restaurants in Minneapolis, and that's saying something because we've tried a lot of brunch spots.

If you're looking for a killer breakfast or brunch spot in Minneapolis that's not your standard bacon and eggs joint, you need to check out Hen House Eatery . Trust us, you're gonna want to bookmark this one.
